How Strong Is The Carbon Fiber Tube?

Carbon fiber
composite materials have many advantages such as light weight and high
strength. Can be made into carbon fiber tubes by winding, rolling, pultrusion,
etc., and are widely used in aerospace, unmanned aerial vehicles, robotic arms,
medical equipment, etc. Carbon fiber tubes mainly rely on the tensile stress of
carbon fiber to bear the load, and their strength needs to be tested before
being put into use. Many customers have no idea about the strength of carbon
fiber tubes. This article will give a brief introduction.
The production
process of carbon fiber tube is different, and the strength of the product is
also different. Taking T700 carbon fiber and resin as raw materials, a carbon
fiber tube made by a winding molding process as an example, a carbon fiber tube
with a specification of 1.6*50*500mm is tested, and it can be found that the
average compressive strength of the carbon fiber tube can reach 230MPa, which
will happen after the load is exceeded brittle failure, the strength of the
matrix determines the strength of the carbon fiber tube.
In the tensile
strength test of the carbon fiber tube, it is found that the carbon tube can
withstand a tensile strength of more than 800 MPa, with a maximum strain of
0.03, and the carbon tube has excellent tensile properties.
Compared with
steel tube, the tensile strength advantage of carbon fiber tube is very
obvious, and the weight can be about 50% lighter, but the brittleness of carbon
tube limits its performance and application, and its own rigidity under collision
and pressure damage will produce serious decline, insufficient toughness is the
biggest shortcoming of carbon fiber composite materials.
